What is Rustic Design?

Rustic interior design is a style with a classic simplicity and evokes a warm homey feel.

The colour palette varies from darker shades of brown to whitewashed neutral tones. The decorations are centered around hand-crafted, salvaged or repurposed items that are primarily made of wood, leather, natural fibers, wicker and wrought iron.

Welcoming and Easy

This decor is often meant to feel unpretentious and incredibly relaxed. Keeping the colour palette monochrome and muted is a key to achieving the relaxed feel of the home.

Tip: Try to pick pieces that are a little weathered or beat up as rustic decor is rarely perfect and instead thrives on imperfection and grittiness.

Solid and heavy pieces

This design is often described as heavy and sturdy. Think of wooden kitchen tables with large square legs that command presence in a room, or couches with deep, dark leathers or colours. The room look can be tied in with handmade or natural feeling decor such as coarse hand-knit blankets or carved stone or wood centerpieces.

Tip: The space does not all have to feel heavy, you can still rock an open concept, add lighter accents or strategically place items to make your space more breathable.

EXPOSED BEAMS

Exposed beams are a built-in statement piece that complete the rustic look in a room and remain a wonderful element of an interior's character. These can be in the form of ceiling beams or rustic wooden beams that frame spaces such as doorways, islands or fireplaces.

Tip: Rather than finding a sleek, glossy burl wood, stick to more reclaimed and unfinished woods that has been roughened up a bit by the elements.
